- Two meters can be very exciting when you start exploring the different

-
- There is plenty of room for fun on the VHF bands.

-
- We do, we do have HF operations in this country similar to what Japan has.
- Except in our country no license is required. Power is limited to 4 watts
- AM/12 watts PEP on SSB. Antenna heights are restricted too as is the
- distance one may "legally" talk to another (150 miles).
-
- Open your eyes people! You have had what you are asking for all the time,
- right under your noses! No code requirement, HF operations, no license....
- That is what you are referring to isn't it? The only difference is that
- Japan still requires its CB'ers to have a license. I had one once and the
- FCC issued callsign was KGP-7471. I had the taste of HF operations in that
- band, got hooked, and saw the privileges offered by amateur radio as an
- incentive to upgrade. And I did! Held the amateur callsigns of KA5MWD,
- N1CLS, and KB1LW. Now hold the call WK1V.
-
- Gooly, gee, whiz! We had it all the time and didn't even see it!

-
- Not quite true; what the Japanese did was selectively ignore the CW
- requirement in the treaty in a very limited case, by giving some of
- their hams voice access to 10m with the restriction of 10w maximum
- power. They still follow the treaty as it regards the rest of the HF
- spectrum. And they've been criticized quite heavily by the other ITU
- nations for doing so.
-
- As for ignoring treaties, I personally can't believe I'm hearing folks
- advocate that. Why stop with the ITU treaty? Why not ignore every
- treaty the US ever signed when it's convenient to do so? Of course, if
- the US starts ignoring treaties, we'd have little standing to criticize
- other countries (like North Korea) who chose to ignore treaties too.
- Treaties are the only form of international law that exists; the US
- could hardly pick and choose which treaties we've signed to enforce or
- ignore without having the whole idea break down.
-
- And don't forget that it was Japan that decided to ignore treaties it
- signed when it invaded China, Korea and Pearl Harbor some 50-odd years

- Yea, the only ones who seemed to rack up the high scores were the
- contesters with beams and at least kW amps. I made a few contacts on
- 10m and 15m with my Butternut vertical and 100W, but nothing to write
- home about, and all but one (OA4EI on 15m) in the Eastern portion of
- North America. Even 20m wasn't that hot, though the Russian stations
- did seem to finally start coming in after around 0300z.
-
- I think it's time for the IARU contest to start having high and low
- power categories, like the rest of the big contests do. Maybe time for
- a "antenna farm" vs "wire/vertical/single antenna" category, too. <g>
-
- Oh well, at least I picked up 7 new countries (which is what I was
- really after) and my first DX on 40m and 80m. 20 more to go for the
- first DXCC, and hoping conditions are a bit better for the IOTA
- contest in two weeks.

- Unfortunately, what may happen is that the "Powers That Be" in Washington
- D.C.will turn around and say, "Hey, all of these other services have to
- pay $50 for license applications. Why, if yours are accepted for free,
- should you expect any kind of service at all? We're not getting any
- money from you guys to hire more people, so processing of your licenses

-
- And then maybe another bill to place a fee on the processing of an amateur
- license will get sent to Congress, like last time. But maybe it will go

-
- Of course, a little complaining would probably do some good. But remember

- to have electronic filing within the year, BTW. So hopefully this will

-
- But yes, the wait is currently unacceptably long, and unwarranted. And
- just wait until the crush that happens when people start sending in their

- in the mail in about 11 weeks.
-
- It seems to me that the FCC (Government) does not understand the concept of
- the Amateur Radio service. If they did, they would put a higher priority on
- these issues. Everyone knows that Amateur Radio is responsible for providing
- many hours of emergency radio service during disasters, etc.
-
- I have heard that they are spending in excess of 70,000/vehicle to enforce
- the rules of the FCC, yet it is outlandish that they only have one person

-
- I, like ira@src.dec.com (Ira Machefsky) am sending a note to the powers at be
